The Devil’s Advocate (1997)

The Devil’s Advocate is a seductive, stylistic thriller that’s full of mystery, intrigue, twists, and turns. Gifted defence lawyer Kevin Lomax (Keanu Reeves) is lured to a high-powered position in the big apple at a respected law firm run by John Milton (Al Pacino). When Kevin and his wife, Mary Ann (Charlize Theron), first move across the country, everything seems perfect, but things soon begin to turn. Warping senses of reality and disconcerting experiences keep increasing, with the stakes increasing each time. What really is going on at the prestigious New York City law firm of Milton Chadwick Waters? And who is John, really… #CallMeDad

Final Destination (2000)

Final Destination observes the long-standing formula of the Dead Teen Movie: it begins with many living teenagers, and then they die. A high school class is boarding a plane to Paris for a class trip when one of the students, Alex Browning (Devon Sawa), vividly sees the plane exploding in flight. Alex tries to get off the plane, has a fight with another student and ends up being ejected along with five other students and a teacher. The aeroplane takes off and, surprise, surprise, explodes in mid-air. Suspenseful and frightening, Final Destination is an entertaining and well-crafted thriller. #NoAccidents #NoCoincidences #NoMishaps #NoEscapes

Annihilation (2018)

For writer-director Alex Garland’s studio-funded debut, he adapted Jeff VanderMeer’s award-winning novel of the same name, Annihilation. Lena (Natalie Portman) is a biologist whose soldier husband (Oscar Isaac) has gone mia. When he suddenly reappears, her fleeting hope that normality will return is shattered when his odd behaviour turns into something far more destructive… Annihilation will shock, fascinate and haunt you… We can only describe it as a layered sci-fi, psychological thriller.

The Host (2006)

Director Bong Joon-ho of Parasite fame’s 2006 action horror The Host is, of course, a monster movie with a social commentary twist - we didn’t see that coming. Inspired by a real-life case in 2000 where a US morgue official was convicted of dumping hazardous chemicals in the Han River in South Korea, The Host’s opening scene is of an American scientist ordering his Korean subordinate to pour a massive amount of formaldehyde down the drain. Fast forward a few years, and we meet the Park family who owns a little convenience store alongside the river… yup, the same river. Does a chemically mutated creature appear from the river? Maybe. Does this film have one of the most iconic “fleeing in panic” crowd scenes? We think so. Should you watch it? YES.

Anaconda (1997)

If you were old enough to have watched this film when it first came out well, it’s time to watch it again because it won’t disappoint! Filmmaker Terri Flores (Jennifer Lopez) is on the hunt for an unremembered tribe in the Amazon along with her cameraman (Ice Cube) and anthropologist (Eric Stoltz). The crew stumble across Paul (Jon Voight) who’s stranded on the riverbank - when he offers to help them find the tribe his peculiar behaviour puts everyone on edge… Oh and this movie does have snakes so yes the title is perfection.
